Technology

Students should have access to more technology opportunities.

The final aspect of the proposed solution is investing in technology opportunities for students. Currently, SJS students are taught computer literacy through biweekly computer labs, and in 8th grade students are able to use laptops for classwork and projects. However, the use of technology should be taken further to enrich student experiences. Technology can be integrated in the classroom for all student levels. According to Drexel University, educational apps like Kahoot can be used to review information from lessons and encourage student participation, while online homework assignments can help students become more organized in a virtual space which is an important skill they will need in high school and onwards ("How To Use Technology In The Classroom"). But students should also be able to learn from technology beyond classroom tools. At St. Matthew's Parish School, students have the opportunity to work in PIRL or the Project & Idea Realization Lab, because "[t]o give students the opportunity to stretch their creative ideas and manifest them in the physical world, they need the appropriate space, tools, time, and support at their schools" (Umekubo). Dedicated school spaces include ready access to tools and technologies such as robotics, coding, and 3D printing. SJS should use the settlement funds to introduce students to these technologies earlier on in their education. This will not only build interest and skills, but will also decrease reluctance or indifference to technology opportunities in high school. It would be a great supplement to SJS' current STEAM curriculum.
